No. 65: Lent

Today is the start of Lent. In the past, I’ve given up soda, sweets, and chocolate, but lately I haven’t given anything up. In fact, I haven’t even been sticking to the “no meat on Fridays” rule in the last few years, save for when I’ve eaten dinner home on Fridays (because my mom makes us stick to it). I even distinctly remember saying one Friday last year “I just want buffalo chicken pizza”.

But I think I’m going to change that this year. I’m in need of some sort of discipline, and I think Lent is a good opportunity for that. Today I started Lent with various fruits and vegetables (including portobello mushrooms, which I love, as my meat substitute), and I can honestly say I think this thing can stick.

Though I do have some disagreements with the Catholic Church, I’m grateful for a period of time where, in giving something up, we learn truly valuable lessons and potentially become better people from them.
